A friend had been bugging me to read/play the Umineko visual novel for about
half a year. When I finally got around to it, I loved it and I really wanted to cosplay from it.
While Maria isn't my favorite character, Episode 4 made her character grow on me, and I really
liked her Apprentice Witch of Origins outfit.
Nothing was overly difficult to make. A lot of it was just really time
consuming. I'm not sure what type of material the black dress is. The wing insignia was done with
my sewing machine using a zigzag stich set to 0. The white ruffles and skirt were made out of a
stretch satin cotton. It was my first time trying to make a circle skirt and working with that
many ruffles. It took me a while to figure it out, but I'm really happy with the results.
The red sash was made out of some silk charmeuse I had lying around, while the cravat thing was
made out of some scrap heavy satin.
The broach was made out of Fimo. A pin was attached to the back of it so I
could connect it to the cravat thing, which then snaps onto the dress. The crown was made out of
wonderflex, gesso, spraypaint, ribbon, and small red jewels (which you can't see in pictures).
The wig was bought off of ebay, and was then dyed a bit darker so it wasn't bright orange. I'm
not sure how much of a difference it made in the end. The staff was made by my dad. It's made
completely out of wood and splits in two pieces so that I can fit it into my suitcase for
travelling.
Sakutarou was a last minute decision. The white and yellow material is really
soft. I'm not sure what the fabric is called though. The orange was some leftover suede, while
the eyes and nose were made out of felt. Finally, I can't knit, so I used an old shirt with a
sort of ribbed knit to make the scarf.
Overall, I'm quite happy with the way the costume turned out. If I had to
complain about anything, it'd be that the sash moves around a lot, even when I pin it down.
